
Richards, Roger M
Roger M. Richards is a photographer and filmmaker who began his career focusing on political and social themes in the Caribbean and South and Central America, including the civil wars in Nicaragua and El Salvador. As an independent photojournalist/writer and represented by the Gamma Liaison agency, he covered the disintegration of Yugoslavia, focusing on the siege of Sarajevo. He worked on special assignments for the Washington Post in Bosnia producing story and photo special reports. Richards' work has been publsihed in most of the world's major magazines and newspapers, including TIME; Newsweek; US News and World Report; New York Time; Washington Post; Los Angeles Times; Miami Herald; USA Today; International Herald Tribune; GEO; Fortune; Forbes; Paris-Match; Stern; Le Figaro; Sunday Times of London.
Richards was the Associated Press photo bureau chief in Bogotá, Colombia, documenting the war against the Cali drug cartel.
Roger M. Richards is the recipient of numerous awards from the National Press Photographers' Association, the White House News Photographers' Association, Pictures of the Year International, the Society of Newspaper Design, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Virginia News Photographers Association. He has twice been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, in 1990 and in 2008.
He became a filmmaker in 1998, focusing on projects about war in the Balkans. He was awarded the first White House News Photographers' Association sabbatical grant for video journalism in 2000.
